Our Doctor
Dr Prasantha Walgampola
(MBBS, FRACGP)
Dr Prasantha Walgampola obtained his Bachelor of Medicine / Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 1995 and has been practicing as a full-time General Practitioner for over two and half decades in both Australia and overseas. He brings extensive clinical experience and a high level of expertise in managing a wide range of medical and surgical conditions. He became a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) in 2018.
Dr Walgampola has a particular interest and expertise in comprehensive skin cancer care, providing both non-surgical and procedural management of skin cancers and skin lesions. He has completed postgraduate qualifications in Skin Cancer surgery and Management:
- Professional Diploma of Skin Cancer Surgery (Bond University , Australia)
- Professional Advanced Certificate of Skin Cancer Surgery (Bond University, Australia)
- Professional Certificate of Skin Cancer Surgery (Bond University, Australia)
- Australasian College of Dermatologists GP Skin Cancer Certificate in Practical Dermoscopy
- Certificate of Competency in Anaesthesia (Post Graduate Institute Colombo, Sri Lanka)
Dr Walgampola provides end-to-end skin cancer care, from early detection and diagnosis through to non-surgical treatment, surgical excision and advanced reconstructive procedures, with a focus on comprehensive patient care and optimal clinical and cosmetic outcomes.
Our Aim in ‘Adelaide Skin Cancer Clinic’ is to identify and treat skin cancers in its infant stages through regular (6 monthly) skin checks using computerised Dermoscopy.
Our Goal is to ‘Save Lives’ by early detection and management of all skin cancers. We will strive to push our Motto ‘Early Detection Saves Lives’ utilising clinical skills and modern technology.
What is skin cancer?
Melanoma is the 4th most common cancer in Australia. It can happen in both sun exposed and sun protected areas of skin!
The other common skin cancers which occur more commonly in sun exposed areas are lightly categorised as Non-Melanoma Skin cancers (NMSC). Most common of these cancers are ‘Squamous Cell Cancer (SCC)’ and ‘Basal Cell Cancer (BCC)’.
BCC is the most common skin cancer and is about 3 times more common than SCC. Aptly called ‘Rodent ulcer’, BCC tend to spread locally and distant spread is rare.
- 2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70.
- More than 2000 Australians die from skin cancer each year.
- Australia has one of the highest rate of skin cancer in the world.
